In these 11 stories, Jacqueline Kolosov gives us the lives of... thoughtful, intelligent, artistic women grappling with the joys and disappointments of motherhood and marriage, their longing to be elsewhere, to return to romantic or exotic pasts. These are all women I would like to keep company with, and so I feel honored to know their stories, listen in on their conversations. The writing is as engaging as the characters, elegant but not strained, a perfect braiding of the quotidian dusty world of the present and the dreamlike, idyllic past--Liza Wieland

Your dialogue really shines in this piece. It’s both featherlight and packed with quiet meaning, and, at times, full of tension. Is this something that comes naturally to you? I’m a writer that can’t write good dialogue to save his life; what advice could you offer?--from the Interview with August Smith

I don’t buy hardbacks all that often, but as soon as I saw that The Red Queen’s Daughter was about Mary Seymour, and included magic to boot, I knew I had to have this book--Kelly Lasiter

“Family Resemblance” is an excellent instruction
guide, an exploration of hybrid literature, and an
inspiration for writing students and writers in
general....
It finishes with an afterward by Jacqueline Kolosov,
“Teaching Hybrid Literary Genres,” that provides
excellent suggestions for how to help writing
students find their voice within this model. It’s easy
to understand why writing teachers will treasure
this book, and yet I found myself reading it for
pleasure.

When we talk about hybrid literary genres, what do we mean? Unprecedented in both its scope and approach, Family Resemblance explores the answer to that question in depth, providing craft essays and examples of hybrid forms by 43 distinguished authors. In this study of eight hybrid genres—including lyric essay, epistolary, poetic memoir, prose poetry, performative, short-form nonfiction, flash fiction, and pictures made of words—the family tree of hybridity takes delightful shape--WINNER of FOREWORD's IndieFab Gold Medal in Nonfiction, 2015
